Hi, and welcome to our Back Door Diner website! I’m Trish, owner and manager. I was born and raised in Lubbock, and learned to cook with my mom and aunt. Though they’ve both passed on, I’m sure they’d approve of the fact that I still use a lot of their recipes. I also like to try new recipes and put my own spin on the classics.

After years of working at other jobs and owning my own candle business, I was ready for a change. My passion is home-style cooking and yummy desserts, so in 2005, with the help and support of my husband, Delbert Varnell, I started Granny Katz Tea Room.

Our homey Back Door Diner opened in 2011 in the heart of downtown Lubbock. Our menu is made up of awesome soups, great salads, sandwiches and frequent daily special meals. We offer quiche as well. The crowning touch, however, are my favorite desserts, and I hope they’ll be your favorites, too. One thing that truly sets us apart is that we don’t fry your food. You’ll find fresh, homemade cooking here! I want to make you feel at home -like you’ve stopped by your best friend’s house, or maybe your favorite aunt’s, for lunch. My staff has the same goal, and Barbie and Brady have been with me for five years! We want to treat you right and serve you great food.

I’ve also been catering for several years now. I will help you plan for any event, large or small. And I’d love to do your holiday cooking for you.

Come by for raspberry tea and dessert, or lunch any weekday. We hope to see you soon!
